San Diego CSA Meeting Notes
1/12/08
There were approximately 30 people that attended this meeting, with 3 new people. The following topics were discussed:
- Sharon Kumpf is developing a new "Mentor Program" for newly diagnosed celiacs in our group. Volunteers were asked to fill out a form to be a mentor. The commitment would be for approximately 6 months, with a minimum of one phone call a week. If interested in participating, please contact Roxie at info@glutenfreeinsd.com.
- Elizabeth reported on a restaurant in North Park on 30th Street called Urban Solace (www.urbansolace.net) that provided her a menu with items marked on it that were gluten free. She said the food was very good.
- Sandra Milne brought a very large quantity of GF food samples that were sent to her from manufacturers because she had written them about our group. Empty bags were provided and everyone helped themselves to free GF food products to try. Thank you so much Sandy!
- Z'Tejas in South Coast Plaza was recommended. They have a gluten free menu there that even includes enchiladas.
- Kimberly Duvall talked about The "Celiac's Dine Out" dinner will be this Tuesday at Mountain Mike's. This will be the last day they will be serving GF pizza. Kimberly also discussed how our group has really helped her since she has become member.
- A chain restaurant called Pizza Fusion is supposed to be opening up two locatiions in San Diego county (Hillcrest and Temecula) in the next few months. They are currently working on a gluten free pizza crust that will be offered on their menu.
- A new book called "Celiac Cooking for Dummies" will be coming out in April. It is co-authored by Danna Korn and Connie Sarros. It can be pre-ordered now at a discount on Amazon.com.
- The latest Lifeline issue (from the national CSA organization) has an excellent article on carbohydrate intolerance and celiac disease. Many of our members thought he gave a lot of good information that should be thought about, especially if you still have digestive issues. Once again, members were encouraged to join the national CSA organization in addition to our San Diego CSA group.
- The February "Celiacs Dine Out" will be at Azul's in La Jolla. It will be during a "Happy Hour". As soon as the details are announced it will be posted on this website, as well as emails sent out to all the members. Azul's has previously given a gluten free cooking class, and hosted our CSA board there for a luncheon. Although they don't have a GF menu (their menu changes every month according to what is in season) they are very good to work with.
- A video from LittleBayBaking.com with Helen Sanders was watched. Helen gave recommendations on how to set up a gluten-free kitchen, GF baking ingredients, and demonstrated two GF recipes.
- Michele Vargas recommended the new pizza crusts from Toovaloo. They are unusually nutritious for a pizza crust, and were also quite tasty. It comes out to about $12 for 2 personal-sized pizza crusts, including shipping. Although made in El Cajon, they appear to be doing only phone-shipping orders at this time. 760-815-7036
Absolutely delicious GF food was brought by several members of the group for everyone to snack on, along with coffee and sodas.
