CSA Meeting Notes
November 10, 2007
Nearly 60 people were present. Those attending included both CSA members, ROCK members, and two new attendees.
This was our potluck "Thanksgiving Feast", and there was a bounty of delicious GF dishes for everyone to share. It was really quite a treat for everyone. Mountain Mike's Pizza also donated many GF pizzas, including one that was lactose free as well.
The following items were discussed:
- Jan Pruitt reported on the national CSA conference that she and Roxie had attended in October. The delicious GF meals were definitely a highlight. She encourages everyone to attend next year's conference to be held in Nebraska.
- Roxie mentioned that Trader Joe's now carries Pacific Foods GF Turkey Gravy (not marked on the box, but is on their website), as well as GF cookies, granola, and more. They also have a fresh flourless chocolate cake, but it was pointed out that it is only declared "wheat-free", not "gluten-free".
- Costco now carries a brand of meatballs that are gluten-free, as they use Tamari sauce instead of soy sauce. The Teriyaki version is NOT GF.
- Sandy Milne has written 70 food manufacturing companies, asking for free samples and coupons. She brought many to the meeting for people to take, and expects to be bringing many more at the next meeting.
- Erica discussed her time outside Denver, Colorado this past August at a 3-day culinary summit. She felt it was a great experience, and encourages everyone to consider going next year. She'll be sending information about it.
- Jan introduced and thanked Samuel from Mountain Mike's Pizza on Clairemont Blvd. for adding GF pizzas to his menu. He discussed how it came about, the trial period to see if it is a viable endeavor for the entire chain to do, the cross-contamination precautions taken, and his instructions to his staff. A lactose/casein-free pizza is also being developed. The GF Bard's Tale beer is also on the menu. Everyone was encouraged to dine at the restaurant to help make it a successful experiment, besides getting to enjoy great GF pizza!
- The new San Diego CSA flier was shown that discusses celiac disease and the local support groups. It is hoped to share these with local gastroenterologists as well as possibly dieticians. It could also be given out at any local events where we might have a table. If anyone would like some, please contact Roxie at info@glutenfreeinSD.org.
- Kimberly Duvall was given a CSA tote bag in honor of her work as co-chairman of the group as well as the dining-out group coordinator.
There were many raffle ticket prizes given out from items brought from the CSA conference, as well as many food items. People were also encouraged to take the CSA paper clip sets, bag clips from Bob's Red Mill, and the many free samples of food.
