Whole Foods Market
www.wholefoodsmarket.com

Whole Foods calls itself “The world’s largest retailer of natural and organic foods.” Their website provides recipes and information about gluten-free eating.

The Whole Foods Market chain has it's own dedicated gluten-free baking facility. The products include breads, muffins, cakes, cookies, pies, and more.

Whole Foods carries foods from many of the gluten-free manufacturers, including cake mixes, flours, cereals, frozen entrees, pastas, and much more. For more information about the gf diet, gluten-free shopping lists according to location, go to http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/nutrition/gluten-free.php

Also available at both Whole Foods Stores is a salad bar and a section of freshly-prepared ready-to-eat food dishes. Each dish has a detailed sign posted listing all ingredients in the dish. You can get the food in containers to go or eat at the tables provided in the stores. The worry is cross-contamination, as always.

Whole Foods also does catering.

Whole Foods La Jolla has a Concierge who is knowledgeable about the gluten-free diet. If you need to set up any allergen tours or events, or even place a special order, you can call or email her at jimme.rogers@wholefoods.com

Major Market
www.majormarketgrocery.com

"I was in Major Market in Escondido today and was pleasantly surprised to find a new gluten free section.  It is the largest selection I have seen in a major (non-health food specific) grocery store. They have several types of Tinkyada pasta, several Bob’s Red Mill Mixes, Pamela’s cookies & mixes, GF soy sauce, and several other items. They seemed to be reasonably priced.

I spoke to the manager on duty, John, and thanked him and he said they are planning on expanding the gluten free items they carry, with customer recommendations.  I will shop there more often knowing they care enough about their customers with food allergies to stock food we can eat.

I know that they also have a store in Fallbrook, but I do not know if they are stocking similar items.

Trader Joe’s
www.traderjoes.com

Trader Joe's is known for it's specialty items that are reasonably priced. Much of their food is their own label, of which many are now labeled "Gluten Free". They keep a gluten-free list at their "information center" that lists approximately 140 foods. This list is also on their website (click here).

Trader Joe's brand will declare any gluten: The following is in response to a question about the ingredients in the Trader Joe's lentils: "No Trader Joe's products will have a gluten source under natural flavorings. If there was any gluten source in the product it would be clearly listed out. The lentils are a gluten free product. The natural flavorings are a proprietary blend of spices." Kellye, Trader Joe's, Customer Relations 10/13

Warning!: Several times in the past there have been errors on the GF list for Trader Joe's. Make sure to read the ingredient labels even though the product is on their GF list.

Henry’s Farmers Market
www.henrysmarkets.com

Henry’s is owned by the Wild Oat's stores that are in other parts of the country. Henry's sells “farm fresh produce” and a variety of “all-natural food choices”. In the past few years they have greatly increased the number of food products they sell which are labeled gluten-free. A free brochure titled "Gluten-Free; A Guide to Living Well without Gluten" written by Danna Korn is available at each store. It gives guidelines for gluten-free shopping that are very helpful.

For Henry's extensive gluten-free guide, go to "Gluten Free Diet" at www.henrysmarkets.com and click on "health", then "gluten-free".

Locations: There are 14 Henry’s Marketplaces in the San Diego area.

Sprouts

Comment: "I shop a lot at Sprouts located on 2nd street in El Cajon . . . They have a large selection of GF dry goods and frozen products. I have been very happy there and the prices are fair."

"Their prices were much lower than the well known G-F health food stores in the San Diego area. Also they have the widest variety of manufacturers of GF products and the various GF items are clearly identified, with the price tags on the shelves. Also if you had questions the store was well staffed with "knowledgeable" staff." Don from Carlsbad, 12/07

Fresh & Easy
". . . this time I wanted to let you know about the few GF products I found at the new grocery chain, Fresh&Easy. I think they're constantly adding new products, because the first time I went there, they only had: Fresh&Easy brand rice flour and rice spaghetti. But during my next visit, I found a few more...Bob's GF brownie mix, cookie mix, and quinoa. It's a nice store, very much like Trader Joe's."
Laura W. 7/08

"Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market is a local market that has a very good selection of basic GF staples (rice pasta, Glutino GF pretzels, Sof'Ella baking mix products, etc.). I was amazed at the prices (Glutino pretzels for $3.99 a bag. . . that's the cheapest I've seen them and rice pasta $1.98 1 lb bag). I am not affiliated with Fresh & Easy or the products mentioned in any way." Andrea, Carlsbad, 11/08

Boney's is similar to Henry's (they used to be owned by the same group), although they don't seem to have as many gluten-free foods.

Costco

Costco is a warehouse store that carries food in bulk. They have started a new labeling policy for their Kirkland line of food products in which they will put "no gluten" on those products that are gluten free (including their roasted chicken). If you have a specific question on the gluten content of any Kirkland item, you can call a Costco service representative at 800-774-2678, Ext. 6.

"I want to recommend a great food store . . .It is a small food store, but it is the only place that I have found a cereal called "Perky's 100% Natural Nutty Rice Cereal" by Pacific Grain. So many gluten free cereals are so loaded with sugar, and this one is not. It is comparable to grape nuts cereal. They also carry shrink-wrapped Boars Head deli meats." L.M., Oceanside

For example, Kathleen, a classically trained chef who graduated from the La Varenne Cooking School in France, has developed recipes for wheat-free foods, including muffins and cakes, as well as ones without dairy products.

"There are a lot of people who have allergies, and we try to be very responsive to customers' needs," Frazier states, adding that "we like the challenge."
